Thanksgiving 2026: the dates
Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November. In 2026 that is Thursday, November 26, which makes Thanksgiving Eve Wednesday, November 25. The Sunday before, November 22, is when many churches hold a Thanksgiving-themed Sunday service — and in liturgical churches it is also Christ the King Sunday, the last Sunday before Advent begins on November 29.
The kinds of Thanksgiving services
Thanksgiving Eve services
The most common format. Many Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, Baptist and non-denominational churches hold a service on the Wednesday evening before Thanksgiving, usually around 6:30 or 7:00 PM and typically 45 minutes to an hour long. For churches with a regular Wednesday night gathering, it simply replaces the usual midweek program. It suits families who will be cooking or traveling on Thursday.
Thanksgiving Day morning services
Some congregations — especially Lutheran and Episcopal parishes, and churches in smaller towns — gather on Thanksgiving morning itself, often at 9:00 or 10:00 AM, early enough to be home before the turkey goes in. These are short, informal and well suited to visitors.
Catholic Thanksgiving Day Mass
Thanksgiving is not a Catholic holy day of obligation, but most parishes celebrate a Mass on Thanksgiving morning, often in place of the regular weekday Mass and at a slightly later time, such as 9:00 AM. The Mass uses special prayers and readings for Thanksgiving Day approved for the United States, and some parishes invite families to bring bread or wine to be blessed for their holiday table. Look up times with our guide to Mass times near me.
Community and interfaith Thanksgiving services
In many American towns, local churches — and often synagogues, mosques and other congregations — take turns hosting a joint community Thanksgiving service. The host rotates each year, clergy from several congregations share the readings and prayers, a combined choir often sings, and the offering usually goes to a local food pantry or a ministerial association's emergency-assistance fund. These services are a natural choice if you do not belong to a particular church, because they are explicitly designed for the whole community.
What happens at a Thanksgiving service
- Hymns of gratitude.“Come, Ye Thankful People, Come,” “Now Thank We All Our God,” “We Gather Together” and “For the Beauty of the Earth” are the classics, along with “Great Is Thy Faithfulness.”
- Readings on thanksgiving and harvest.Psalm 100 (“Make a joyful noise unto the Lord”), Deuteronomy 8, Philippians 4:4–7 and Luke 17:11–19 — the ten lepers, only one of whom returns to say thank you — are frequent choices.
- Shared thanks. Many churches invite people to call out or write down something they are thankful for. It is always optional.
- A food or giving drive. Bringing canned goods or a donation for a food pantry is very common. Our guide to churches with food banks explains how church pantries work.
- Pie afterwards. A Thanksgiving Eve pie social or a simple coffee hour is a long-standing tradition in many congregations.
Dress is casual to smart casual. Children are welcome, and Thanksgiving services are generally shorter and more relaxed than a typical Sunday service — a good first visit if you have been away from church for a while. See also visiting a church for the first time.
Thanksgiving community meals at churches
Many churches serve a free community Thanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving Day or the weekend before, open to anyone who would otherwise eat alone or cannot afford a holiday meal. Others distribute Thanksgiving food boxes in the week before. These are usually announced in early November on church websites, social media and local news. If you would like to volunteer, sign up early — Thanksgiving volunteer slots tend to fill before the meal slots do.
