The short answer
For most American churches, business casual is always safe: khakis or slacks with a button-down for men; a blouse with pants, a skirt, or a modest dress for women. You will never look out of place in business casual at any U.S. church.
By tradition
Catholic Mass
Lean toward modest and respectful. Long sleeves and covered shoulders are appreciated. Avoid shorts, tank tops, or beachwear. At many parishes, especially traditional Latin Mass communities, women may wear a simple head covering (mantilla) — but it is never required for visitors.
Orthodox
Modest dress is expected. Women typically wear skirts or dresses below the knee with covered shoulders, and many wear head scarves. Men wear long pants and a collared shirt. Avoid shorts.
Mainline Protestant (Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, Episcopal)
Business casual to casual. A button-down shirt or blouse with neat pants or a skirt is perfect. Suits and ties are common in older congregations but rarely required.
Baptist & Pentecostal
Varies a lot. Traditional Southern Baptist congregations and Pentecostal “Sunday best” churches expect dressier attire — a tie or Sunday dress. Many newer Baptist churches are casual.
Non-denominational, evangelical, megachurches
Generally very casual. Jeans, t-shirts, and sneakers are normal. You'll often see staff in shorts or athleisure. No one will look twice at how you're dressed.
What to avoid (almost anywhere)
- Beachwear, swimwear, or visible swimsuits
- Anything with offensive graphics or wording
- Strapless tops without a cover
- Cleavage-baring or extremely short hemlines (varies by church but usually unwelcome)
- Hats indoors (men, in most traditions)
Seasonal tips
Churches almost always run their A/C cold in summer and may keep heat conservative in winter. A light cardigan, jacket, or scarf is wise year-round.
What about kids?
Kids almost always get a pass — Sunday school clothes are fine. For older kids and teens, follow the church's lead. See our guide on churches with childcarefor what kids' programs are like.
The principle
Dress with respect for the gathering, comfort for yourself, and humility toward those around you. If you forget all the specifics — that principle alone will carry you through any church door in America.
