Churches open on Saturday

Whether you work Sundays, prefer evenings, or observe the Sabbath on Saturday, you have more options than you might think. Many U.S. churches offer Saturday services.

Why some churches meet on Saturday

Historically, most Christian churches have gathered on Sunday — the first day of the week, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus. But Saturday services are increasingly common for practical and theological reasons.

Types of churches with Saturday services

Saturday-evening services at evangelical and non-denominational churches

The most common form of Saturday church in America is the Saturday evening service at a large evangelical or non-denominational congregation. These services are typically identical to Sunday morning — same sermon, same worship band, same format. They exist to serve people with work obligations, parents whose kids have Sunday sports, and anyone who prefers a different time.

Many large megachurches — Willow Creek Community Church, Life.Church, Saddleback Church, and similar — have run Saturday evening services for decades.

Seventh-day Adventist churches

Seventh-day Adventists worship on Saturday based on their understanding of the biblical Sabbath (the seventh day of the week, Saturday). There are approximately 5,000 Seventh-day Adventist congregations in the United States. Their Saturday morning services typically include a Sabbath School (a structured Bible study) followed by the main worship service.

Seventh-day Baptist churches

Seventh-day Baptists also observe the Saturday Sabbath within a Baptist theological framework. There are fewer congregations than the Adventist tradition, but they exist in many states.

Messianic Jewish congregations

Messianic Jewish congregations — Jewish believers in Jesus as Messiah — typically meet on Friday evening (Erev Shabbat) or Saturday morning to observe the biblical Sabbath. They combine Jewish liturgy with Christian faith in Jesus.

Catholic Vigil Masses

The Catholic Church permits fulfilling the Sunday Mass obligation by attending a Vigil Mass on Saturday evening (beginning at 4:00 or 5:00 PM in most parishes). Saturday Vigil Masses are identical in content to Sunday Mass. Many Catholic parishes offer multiple Saturday Mass times.

How to find a church open on Saturday

To find Saturday services near you:

  1. Search our directory for churches in your city: find a church near me
  2. On each church's profile or website, look for "service times" — Saturday options are usually listed alongside Sunday times
  3. Search specifically for Seventh-day Adventist churches if you want Saturday-morning worship
  4. Search for "Catholic parish Saturday Mass" in your city for the nearest Vigil Mass

Many churches don't advertise their Saturday services prominently online — calling the church directly is often the fastest way to confirm Saturday availability.

Online church as a Saturday option

If no physical church near you offers Saturday services, consider online church. Hundreds of churches livestream their Saturday services, and many allow on-demand replay of Sunday sermons throughout the week. This is increasingly common for shift workers, healthcare professionals, and others with non-standard schedules.

Frequently asked questions

Is Saturday worship biblical?

Both positions have serious biblical arguments. Seventh-day traditions hold that God sanctified the seventh day (Saturday) as the Sabbath in creation (Genesis 2:2–3) and that this observance was never changed. Most of Christianity observes Sunday based on the New Testament pattern of gathering on the first day of the week (Acts 20:7, 1 Corinthians 16:2) in commemoration of the resurrection.

Can I attend a Saturday service if I normally go to church on Sunday?

Yes. Most Saturday services are designed to be fully equivalent to Sunday morning. Many regular churchgoers attend Saturday services occasionally when their Sunday schedule doesn't work.
